"Legend has it that gnomes live underground, where they guard the nearby plant life."

They can be traced back to ancient Rome, but it was the Renaissance period when took the form closer to what we see today.  The legend goes on to say when the gnome comes above ground and the sunlight hits it, it turns to stone.  However, after dark they go back to their original form and continue their duties of protection.
